Halloween mask problem ?

about a month ago I spray painted my old halloween mask black to make it look cooler, but now it is constantly real sticky like it had a reaction to the paint or something. is there anything i can put on the mask to make the stickiness go away. I really want to try and save the mask because it is one of my favorites.

I doubt the stickiness will go away. Try a test spot and sprinkle some corn starch or baby powder very lightly on it and see if that helps. You don't want too much or it will be white, just enough to take the tackiness away. If that doesn't work, buy a can of primer and spray that over the black. If the tackiness goes away, re-spray with black. If nothing works, looks like you need to buy another one. Good luck. :)Halloween mask problem ?
Try painting it with Elmer's glue watered down.One third water two thirds glue.let dry thoroughly you can use a blow dryer set on cool to help dry it, also set on high. If it still feels tacky then try elmer's glue alone. I hope it works for you.

im 13 years old and today i went to partycity to purchase a scary halloween mask, when i bought one and took it home to try it on, it was large and it was not the right size for me. For Halloween making a fat face mask?

I would like to be Big Mamma for Halloween. I have an idea how to make my body larger, but what can I do about my face? I would like to make my face look large and black. I would prefer that it forms to my face and the ';mask'; moves along with my face features. Such as when I smile or lift my eyebrows the mask moves along with it.

Professional Halloween Mask Making.?

I'm interested in attending a school where students are taught or trained to sculpt and paint halloween masks, (the kind that are typically sold in most party and theatrical stores.) I'm interested in working under a famous mask distributor such as ';Don Post, Scare Crow, or Night Fright';, etc. (I don't even know if that last name is a real company or not, but you understand my point. Any real Halloween enthusiast would recognize Don Post as the pioneer monster mask company of the U.S.





Any help would be greatly appreciated.Professional Halloween Mask Making.?
This isn't something you'd really go to school for, unless its an arts school that has a great sculpting or theater department. Even going to a school like that won't get you the experience you need. The absolute BEST thing you can do, if your are truly serious about pursuing Mask Making, is find a company local to you that does something similar to what you would like to be doing (it doesn't necessarily need to be making masks as long as it is related) and see if you can get an internship.





Books and instruction can only get you so far. To get really good at the art you will need to get lots of hands-on experience. AND MAKE SURE YOU START A PORTFOLIO! Take pictures and keep copies of everything you make. When you eventually get good enough at the craft, people will want to see what you have made in the past. Your portfolio is the best way to provide examples of what you are capable of.





I don't know where you live, so I can't recommend any specific studios to email about possible internships, but if you do a search for Halloween production studios, you should be able to find something that is near you and doing stuff that you'd be interetsted in.

When you fire the clay, the kind of paint you use depends on if it's Matt or Glossy.





You COULD cover a Matt mask in Paraffin Wax if you really wanted to.

Make a halloween mask - advice?

so I want to make a big mask for halloween, it will be a sort of large bobble head type deal to cover my whole head.





problem is i'm a bit unsure of the best way to do it? i was thinking of getting a block (or blocks) of oasis foam or even polystyrene, then carving this to the desired head shape and finally covering in paper mache and painting.

The giant balloon idea is a perfect solution for many reasons. It is relatively cheap and easy to buy. The other more important thing is, once the layers of paper machier have dried, it will still be relatively lightweight and easy to construct.


To construct it you will need: a huge balloon, a lot of newspaper, cut into palm of your hand sized pieces (tearing the page into several smaller pieces works really well as the finished edges will not be seen once the project is dried) a mixture of plain flour and water, making sure there are no lumps... it will need to be the consistency of batter or pancake mixture, then add about a hand-full of salt to prevent the mixture from decaying.


Paint the balloon all over with the flour/water/salt solution, being careful to hold onto the part where you blow it up so that you have a place to tie some string to hang it to dry.Then smooth on the newspaper, one piece at a time, ensuring that it sits really flat, and then add another layer of glue mixture and another layer of newspaper until you have covered the whole balloon - allow this layer to dry thoroughly...then repeat the process until the layers are thick enough for your purpose (about ten layers ought to do it) - hang the balloon up by the knotted closure with a piece of string to somewhere like a washing line in between dryings.


Once dry, take the closure part and pop the balloon with a pin, making very sure to hold onto the closure so you can pull the balloon out of your new mold. Cut the shapes out you need to make it big enough to put over your head using a craft knife or blade. Paint as desired.

Possessed halloween mask?

I had a halloween mask a number of years ago that was very strange. It was a rubber skull mask that I swear was cursed somehow and I'm normally not a believer in these things, but I put it in a suitcase when I was done wearing it one night and went to take it out of the suitcase and it was locked. So I put the suitcase under my bed and I'd hear noises under my bed. I got scared and put it under the stairs in the basement and I heard terrible noises coming from the basement a couple days later. So then I'd had it! I used pliars and tore the lock off the suitcase and took the mask out and burned the mask. I did this by throwing it in the fireplace and then I saw red like blood coming off the mask. The mask was originally skin colored light tanish color. Do you think the mask was possessed?Possessed halloween mask?
I think the mask you had inherited the soul of your deceased car, the tiburon (i'm assuming that's where you get you screen name). It was calling to you saying, ';You shouldn't have put me in the lake. You shouldn't have put me in the junkyard. You shouldn't have put me in the crusher. You shouldn't have sold me. Uh.. did you lock the suitcase after you put it in there? If not, someone else might have. The noises could be due to creaky floorboards or a water heater. The reddish blood could have been an illusion that the flames were creating while burning the rubber, they might have made it look red. Who knows? I guess I had to be there. lol.

My Halloween mask keeps cracking!?

I want to build a mask to look like Vlad, from the comic book Hack/Slash. I bought a hockey type mask for the base (so it's got eye holes and a strap) and want to find some material to build ONTO that. A friend recommended using children's molding clay, which shaped and molded great, but cracked as it dried.





So my question is this:


I need some type of substance, that is bought in stores since I don't have time to order online, that can be shaped and molded onto my mask, but also will not crack or chip off.

Papier mache is the perfect material. And it is so cheap and easy. It is also light weight- important for a mask..





You can use liquid starch from any grocery store.


You can also use wheat paste (I prefer wp because it doesn't smell as bad). A tip- use warm water to mix and it is easier on the hands.





You must have an armature to build on top of. The hockey mask is a good start. If you want anything to come off the mask build it with masking tape and cardboard and whatever other material you can cover with glue and newspaper. Rolled newspaper is good too. So is wire.





Other material: newspaper or newsprint, paper towels, paint





Tear paper into appropriate sized strips. Smaller strips for curvier, smaller areas.





Coat paper with paste/starch. The paper needs to be saturated so that the paper changes color not lightly coated. Important especially in cold weather- scrape off excess paste. If you do not it may mildew before it dries.





Layer strips of paper over the armature. Crisscross the layers for strength. Don't apply more than two or three layers without letting it dry. You can stop when it is hard enough. The last layer should be paper towels. the towels are stretchier than newsprint and makes a smooth layer to paint over. White or brown is best and no need for expensive- in this case cheap works better.





Paint using any kind of paint you want. You can also decorate by covering with anything that you can glue on- fabric, feathers, leather, tissue paper- you get the idea.





When you have finished painting, I would coat with clear coat, both inside and out. You can do any finish, matt, gloss etc.

It depends on whether you want to make the mask entirely on your own or have a base to work with. I'll help you with either one.





1.) You could buy a plain mask from any party store or even a grocery store for about fifty (50) cents. Then you could decorate it yourself using supplies from a craft store.





2.) You could buy a plain mask, add on paper mache to make it look home made, and then decorate it. You will still have to get a plain mask, but in this idea, you cover it with paper mache to make it look like you made it yourself, and it gives a nice touch to it.





How To Make Paper Mache:





You will be using three ingredients, namely white glue, water and paper. Mix two (2) parts of the white glue with one part of fairly warm water and then stirring properly to produce the paper mache paste. Dip your pieces of paper in the paste and apply them to the chosen shape. You can use newspaper.





3.) This will be more difficult, but you could just make paper mache and mold it into a mask shape as you go. I do not recommend this idea.





Decoration:





You can use many things like feathers, paint, glitter, glue, sparkles, beads, and stickers.

How to make a Halloween mask?

Its the start of September and I am wanting to make a nice costume for Halloween. Something like ';The Lord of Darkness'; from the movie ';Legend'; with Tom Cruise. I don't have 2-300 dollars to spend on making molds and latex so anything professional like that is out. Anyone have any cheap alternatives or ideas like making it out of styrofoam or somehting like that?

I have two ideas for you. The instructions to both are going to be pretty long. So I'm going to only type out one for you. If you'd like to hear the other one then email me at krgr_1428@yahoo.com with the subject ';Halloween'; or ';Legend'; anything to let me know who you are.





One idea is to make a paper mache mask. Pretty easy. And pretty cheap. The other idea which, you probably wont be interested in, is to do ';Devil'; type make up. It involves a bald cap, ear pieces and horns, which you can buy cheap anywhere and apply with spirit gum or latex adhesive. All cheap and easy to work with but not sure you want to bugger with it. So I'm going to give you the instructions for paper mache. If you want to hear the other email me.





For paper mache masks you will need:


a round balloon


newspaper


paper mache glue


plastic wrap


paint





Make sure you cover you work surface well. I usually set down newspaper first and then wax paper or plastic wrap on top of the newspaper.





Decide what size and shape of mask or head you want and choose the appropriate sized balloon. Blow up the balloon and tie it closed. Find a bowl or cup your balloon can sit in while you work on it. Completely cover the cup or bowl with plastic wrap so the paper mache does not stick to it. Also cover the table or work surface under the cup with the plastic wrap. Set your balloon in the cup or bowl and set it aside.





Tear several newspaper pages into strips. You will want them 1 inch wide and about 6 - 8 inches long. Set them aside





Use a large bowl to prepare your paper mache paste The paste will be sticky! I would suggest using a bowl that is easy to soak and clean (glass perhaps) or even a disposable bowl. Now you are ready to start with the paper mache.





Dip the newspaper strips into the glue and spread them onto the balloon. cover the balloon. Set aside and let this first layer dry





Once the first layer is completely dry, use various supplies to make the facial features on your ballooen if desired. You can make a nose, ears, thick eye brows, lips, etc. Use cardboard, masking tape, foil Use masking tape to hold everything in place.





You cna builf up certain areas with paper and tape or wahtever to make horns and that big devil type chin.





Add atleast two more layers of paper mache to your balloon. Allow each layer to dry completely before putting on the next layer





You can now paint and decorate your mask or face as desired. You can add hair using yarn, thin scraps of material, or anything else you desire.





To make a more realistic shaped face, make as above except use a double layer of tin foil instead of a balloon. Use your face as a mold. Have someone help you gently press the tin foil to your face to get a nice face mold. Wad up newspaper and put it inside the curved section of the foil mold and lay it on your work surface. While applying the first layer of newspaper and paste, make sure not to press on your mold too hard or it will lose it shapes!

Almost forgot to tell you how to make the paste! There are two that I've used:





flour and water


Mix one part flour with about 2 parts of water until you get a consistancy like thick glue. Add more water or flour as necessary. Mix well to get out all the bumps. Add a few tablespoons of salt to help prevent mold!





You can use regular glue mixed with a bit of water. Mix using about 1 part water with 2 parts glue

Spencer's has some really gross halloween masks, and I think I have seen a leatherface mask there before but im not really sure. If it fits you face tightly (and you can see out of it), put it on and surn the net for several hours. This has two advantages: First, you want it in the shape of your face. Second, the your body heat will help relax the mask. With that in mind you might want to suak it in hot water, quickly dry it, and then put it on. That will help speed the process.

I started collecting Halloween masks about 6 years ago. I typically had them mounted on my walls, stuffed with newspaper. When I took some of them down to change the display this year I noticed that many of them are dry, stiff, crumbling and/or cracked. This didn't bother me with some of the cheaper masks but one of my favorites is starting to show similar signs. Is there anyway to alleviate this dryness in the material, which I suspect is latex for all of them. Also, is there a good way to prevent this from happening while they are on display. It seems selective. The material can be applied directly to your face (use Vaseline first) or you can make forms from wadded up newspaper. You cut the plaster in strips, wet with water, and apply to surface. Dries quickly and can be sanded and painted. You can also decorate with fur, sequins, feathers, etc...

Halloween is my favorite holiday. I go all out decorating the house both inside and outside. I love the costumes, the thrill of trying to be scared and everything about it.
