Using an actual pumpkin for a halloween mask?

has anyone ever used and actual pumpkin for a halloween costume/mask? if so give me some details, i already know i'll have to deal with the smellUsing an actual pumpkin for a halloween mask?
yeah i did it was really smelly and and hard to see becuase it keep turning as i ran trying to catch up with my friends. Also be prepared to know that it gets really like suffercating kinda cuz your hot breath gets traped in the pumpkinUsing an actual pumpkin for a halloween mask?
You'll have to deal with the smell and the weight. Cut it from the bottom and make sure you cut the holes big enough so you can breathe. I would thin it out a lot too...but with that being said you will have to be extra careful because it could crack easier. Good luck.
no way!
You are putting yourself out there with a real pumpkin. Friends will try to hit you in the head to break the pumpkin, it will leave slime all over your head, the stank, as you walk it will not be comfortable %26amp; you will sweat 10Xs as much causing more %26amp; more slime. Not the way to go out buddy. Try to think of sumthinelse or a fake pumpkin head. They have them w/ lights %26amp; stuff in them ya know.
don't do it, just paint your face orange with balck nose, eyes and mouth.
I wouldn't do it. It'd be gross. and what if you see someone you like? how would you deal with this? I'd reconsider it
I think someone may have thought about using an actual pumpkin, but realized how much 'joy' would be lost in the doing.. Not just the smell but the total lack of peripheral vision *safety issue*, air circulation issues *another safety issue* and the ultimate odor *just a yucky issue*. But if you're determined to do it, who's to stop you?
that sounds really gross.. moist and smelly.
That would be rather, no extremely funny. But its probably not a good idea. Your vision would be extremely impaired, and that would be a stupid costume to end up in the morgue in.
ha good luck with that :)
ur a idiot!!!
Nope..Justy it will smell and will be heavy good luck..
Go to a local craft store and buy a foam pumpkin, you can buy all different sizes and you can get pumpkins that look real. Not only will you not have to deal with the smell, but they are a lot lighter then a real pumpkin. My mother has two of the foam pumpkins on the porch and they look very real...
Hm... doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Are you thinking of putting it over your head? I'd try to make something out of paper mache to resemble a pumpkin, if I were you.
I have not seen, nor known of it being used.

However, I think there might be some way of limiting the ';smell'; issue, IF you start your ';project'; soon enough.

I assume you are going to use the entire pumpkin, right? If so, best to cut it in half to prepare it (of course to USE it too, unless you think you're going to slip it over your head). But to cut it in half to clean it out...yes... do it.

Then, as best as possible, SCRAPE OUT as MUCH of the internal pumpkin flesh as possible... for 2 reasons. Large pumpkins (which is likely what you need to use) are QUITE HEAVY! If you don't remove as much of the flesh as possible, that weight is going to really get TO you as your evening progresses. Secondly, it is the flesh which is smelly. Get rid of as much of it as possible, you get rid of much of the smell.

It will, however WEAKEN the walls of the pumpkin, because the flesh supports the skin. HOWEVER... here is where you start early and get creative.....

Start now, because you will want to let the remainder of the pumpkin DRY OUT as much as possible. Again, the moisture is the smell. You can aid drying by using an oven on a VERY LOW temp (like 100-120F) for a LONG period of time... maybe several dryings.

Go to your HARDWARE store... OR CRAFT store... there are glazes, sealants, etc. which you can use to seal the pumpkin skin. I don't know which one(s) can be used... but you have to stop the exterior skin from SHRIVELLING when it dries. Maybe some sort of ';glue'; or hardener is for the interior to replace the ';structure';/support removed by the removal of the flesh.

CAUTION!!! When using chemicals ... PLEASE KEEP IN MIND the safety of these chemicals on your BREATHING, eyes, and SKIN exposure! If you're going to have this thing on your head for any length of time, those chemicals can wreak havoc if you're not careful!

But heck... maybe something as simple as Elmer Glue can help... MAYBE if you use a paper maiche to line the interior to restructure it... that shouldn't be a chemical problem... especially if you use the traditional flour/water paste and newspaper strips!

As I said, this sort of ';process'; needs TIME, so get crackin!

I do hope I have helped!

Have a spooky day!
DON'T DO IT! ONCE YOU CUT IT IT WILL ROTT FAST.
Isn't it kind of childish for grown people to celebrate halloween?
Besides the smell, It could be very heavy to wear. What about using a foam pumpkin from a craft store. You can carve it whatever way you like and still wear it.
No I haven't but if you do use one as a mask, you may want to dry it first or something. That may may it wrinkled but it would probably stay on a little easier because it's stiff. Great idea though!
nope..good luck though.
